BlocstopĀ® BSO: The Ultimate Automatic Overspeed Safety Device

Posted by ProTek Crane Solutions on 22nd Jan 2026

Safety redundancy is mandatory when lifting personnel or valuable loads. The Blocstop BSO serves as a secondary braking system for Tirfor and Tirak hoists. This device protects against hoist failure and suspension wire rope breakage. ProTek Crane Solutions offers this equipment to secure your work platforms.

Operating Principle

The Blocstop BSO operates automatically. A centrifugal governor inside the device constantly monitors the speed of the wire rope passing through the unit. The clamping jaw mechanism triggers immediately if the governor detects overspeed. These jaws grip the wire rope to hold the load instantly.

The device includes an emergency stop button for manual control. Pressing this button releases the clamping mechanism and forces the jaws to close. The control lever returns to the closed position upon activation. Reset the device using the control lever.

Technical Specifications

The Blocstop BSO series accommodates various load capacities and wire rope diameters.

  • BSO 500 Series: Rated for 300 to 500 kg.
  • BSO 1000 Series: Rated for 800 to 1000 kg.
  • BSO 2000 Series: Rated for 2000 kg.
  • BSO 3000 Series: Rated for 3000 kg.
  • Temperature Range: Operates between -40 degrees C and 80 degrees C.

Applications

Safety organizations require secondary brakes for man-riding operations. The Blocstop BSO fulfills this requirement.

  • Platform Safety: Mount the device on a separate safety wire rope to protect against suspension failure.
  • Load Holding: Use the device to hold a load while exchanging a defective hoist.
  • Tensioning Protection: Secure masts and scaffolding during tensioning processes.

Maintenance And Inspection

Perform regular checks to guarantee function.

  • Daily Check: Activate the emergency stop button manually at least once a day.
  • Visual Check: Verify the centrifugal weights rotate through the control window during operation.
  • Annual Service: An authorized repairer must clean and inspect the unit yearly or after 200 hours of use.
  • Roller Replacement: Change the driving and pressure rollers annually.
  • Jaw Inspection: Check jaw wear regularly using a test rod. Replace jaws if they fail to grip the rod
  • Wire Rope: Replace the wire rope if the diameter reduces by 10 percent of the rated diameter.
